Orange Peel Block

I am writing about the blocks from My Small World designed by Jen Kingwell. The orange peel block is the fifth block in the series but the first one that is an applique block.

The orange peel pieces can be hand appliqued with the seam allowance turned under or the pieces can be cut out with no seam allowances and glued with fusible.

See the block below. The “peels” were ironed on with a fusible product and then the edges were embellished with a button hole stitch by machine. I enjoyed this easy way to applique. The quilting really makes the peels pop.

I’ve learned from Jen Kingwell to use many different prints including but not limited to florals and stripes.

I am such a big fan of Jen Kingwell’s use of fabric that I have really studied her book, have tried her suggestions for choosing fabrics and took a class from her in January 2020. In addition to florals and stripes, she advises using checks, polka dots, and geometrics. You can see a little of everything in the photo above. This variety is what kept me interested and excited about making my version of Jen’s quilt.
