Here is the third block in the series of 30-some blocks from My Small World by Jen Kingwell. The block seen above is called square in a square. I have a question for you. Is it okay to pair batik fabric with a regular cotton fabric?

Some people don’t like it, don’t recommend it and don’t do it. I do. Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts has designed several lines of fabric with both kinds of cotton fabric for at least a decade.

I chose a rainbow mix of batiks and cotton.

My opinion is that batiks can add a glow not always possible with regular cottons alone. Notice I didn’t say batiks add a spark because bright cottons often do have a spark to them. One generalization would be to say it’s okay to use bright cottons with batiks.

A colorful pillow can be a great source of inspiration. See the combination of batiks and cottons.
